RESUMO

Recent demographic findings show increased rates of death due to suicide, drug addictions, and alcoholism among midlife white adults of lower socioeconomic status (SES). These have been described as "deaths of despair" though little research has directly assessed psychological vulnerabilities. This study used longitudinal data from the Midlife in the U.S. (MIDUS) study to investigate whether low levels of eudaimonic and hedonic well-being predict increased risk of deaths of despair compared to other leading causes of death (cancer, heart disease). The investigation focused on 695 reported deaths with cause of death information obtained from 2004 to 2022 via NDI Plus. Key questions were whether risk for deaths due to despair (suicide, drug addiction, alcoholism) compared to deaths due to cancer or heart disease were differentially predicted by deficiencies in well-being, after adjusting for sociodemographic variables. Low levels of purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth and positive affect predicted significantly greater likelihood of deaths of despair compared to deaths due to heart disease, with such patterns prominent among better-educated adults. The findings bring attention to ongoing intervention efforts to improve psychological well-being.

A feasible nanoscale framework of heterogeneous plasmonic materials and proper surface engineering can enhance photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance owing to increased light absorbance, efficient bulk carrier transport, and interfacial charge transfer. This article introduces a new magnetoplasmonic (MagPlas) Ni-doped Au@Fex Oy nanorods (NRs) based material as a novel photoanode for PEC water-splitting. A two stage procedure produces core-shell Ni/Au@Fex Oy MagPlas NRs. The first-step is a one-pot solvothermal synthesis of Au@Fex Oy . The hollow Fex Oy nanotubes (NTs) are a hybrid of Fe2 O3 and Fe3 O4 , and the second-step is a sequential hydrothermal treatment for Ni doping. Then, a transverse magnetic field-induced assembly is adopted to decorate Ni/Au@Fex Oy on FTO glass to be an artificially roughened morphologic surface called a rugged forest, allowing more light absorption and active electrochemical sites. Then, to characterize its optical and surface properties, COMSOL Multiphysics simulations are carried out. The core-shell Ni/Au@Fex Oy MagPlas NRs increase photoanode interface charge transfer to 2.73 mAcm-2 at 1.23 V RHE. This improvement is made possible by the rugged morphology of the NRs, which provide more active sites and oxygen vacancies as the hole transfer medium. The recent finding may provide light on plasmonic photocatalytic hybrids and surface morphology for effective PEC photoanodes.

Clay toys have been used as play materials and educational tools for children. Clay toys exhibit adherent properties, and may facilitate chemical ingestion via dermal absorption and oral (hand-to-mouth, HTM) exposures. Inhalation exposure also be considered when contain volatile chemicals. The purpose of this study was to estimate the exposure dose for chemicals in clay toys via three exposure routes, and to evaluate the relationship between the exposure contribution of each route considering both the chemical properties and children's age. Chemical analysis was conducted for 9 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), 17 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and 7 metal elements in clay toys (n = 66) purchased from Korean market. Exposure factors for usage pattern of clay toys were conducted based on a nationally representative survey in Korea. A total of 12,144 (60.7%) children responded positively to playing with clay toys. Exposure to SVOCs and VOCs in clay toys via HTM, inhalation, and dermal absorption were estimated. The exposure level was the highest in styrene with 5.2 × 10-3 mg/kg-bw/day (95th percentile population), which was approximately 13% of the acceptable daily dose for styrene. In 3-year-old children, dermal absorption route contributed the highest at 59.2-100%. Chemicals with higher octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) had the greater the contribution of the dermal absorption route and the weaker the contribution of the HTM route. In infants (0-2 years), the contribution via HTM exposure was higher than that in the other age groups. The contribution of inhalation exposure differed depending on the volatility of the chemicals. Furthermore, the exposure route contribution significantly differed due to age-dependent behavioral changes in children. These results suggest that the exposure assessments for children could be considered with multiple exposure routes related to chemical properties.

One-dimensional hybrid nanostructures composed of a plasmonic gold nanowire core covered by a shell of magnetic oxide nanoparticles (Au@FexOy NWs) were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal synthesis process. The effects of reaction temperature, time, reducing agent, and precursor as well as postsynthesis treatment were optimized to produce highly uniform NWs with a diameter of 226 ± 25 nm and a plasmonic core aspect ratio of 25 to 82. By exploiting the interaction of NWs with an external magnetic field, precise arrangements into highly periodic photonic structures were achieved, which can generate distinctive structural colors that are vividly iridescent and polarization-sensitive. Furthermore, a Bouligand-type chiral nematic film consisting of multistacked unidirectional layers of achiral NWs was fabricated using a modified layer-by-layer deposition method, which displays circular dichroism (CD) and chiral sensing capability. The addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein analyte induced a concentration-dependent wavelength shift of CD peaks. These intriguing properties of magnetoplasmonic anisotropic NWs and their self-assemblies could be consequently valuable for developing nature-inspired structural color imprints as well as solid-state chiral sensing devices.

Water splitting driven by renewable energy sources is considered a sustainable way of hydrogen production, an ideal fuel to overcome the energy issue and its environmental challenges. The rational design of electrocatalysts serves as a critical point to achieve efficient water splitting. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with two-dimensionally (2D) layered structures hold great potential in electrocatalysis owing to their ease of preparation, structural flexibility, and tenability. However, their application in catalysis is limited due to their low activity attributed to structural stacking with irrational electronic structures, and their sluggish mass transfers. To overcome this challenge, attempts have been made toward adjusting the morphological and electronic structure using appropriate design strategies. This review highlights the current progress made on design strategies of transition metal-based LDHs (TM-LDHs) and their application as novel catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) in alkaline conditions. We describe various strategies employed to regulate the electronic structure and composition of TM-LDHs and we discuss their influence on OER performance. Finally, significant challenges and potential research directions are put forward to promote the possible future development of these novel TM-LDHs catalysts.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence supports the efficacy and safety of high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy as a boost or monotherapy in prostate cancer treatment. We initiated a new HDR prostate brachytherapy practice in April 2014. Here, we report the learning experiences, short-term safety, quality, and outcome. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From April 2014 to December 2017, 164 men were treated with HDR brachytherapy with curative intent. Twenty-eight men (17.1%) underwent HDR brachytherapy as monotherapy, receiving 25 to 27 Gy in 2 fractions. Men treated with HDR brachytherapy as a boost received 19 to 21 Gy in 2 fractions. Fifty-two men (31.7%) had high-risk disease. HDR procedure times, dosimetry, and response were recorded and analyzed. Genitourinary (GU) and gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities were recorded according to the toxicity criteria of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. RESULTS: Mean HDR procedure times decreased yearly from 179 minutes in 2014 to 115 minutes in 2017. Median follow-up was 18.6 months (range, 3-55 months). At last review, 79% of patients reported returning to baseline GU status, and 100% of patients noted no change in GI status from their baseline. Four patients experienced acute urinary retention. Treatment planning target volume (PTV) was defined as prostate with margins. Dosimetrically, 97.5% of all HDR implants had PTV D90 ≥100%, 81.5% had PTV V100 ≥95%, 73.6% had maximal urethral doses ≤120%, and 77.5% had rectal 1 mL dose ≤70% (all but one ≤10.8 Gy). The estimated 3-year overall survival was 98.7% (95% confidence interval, 91.4%-99.8%), and disease-free survival was 96.2% (95% confidence interval, 89.5%-98.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The low incidence of GU and GI complications in our cohort demonstrates that a HDR brachytherapy program can be successfully developed as a treatment option for patients with localized prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have investigated the clinical benefits of Ologen for trabeculectomy. However, its benefits for Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation have not been investigated as extensively. The aim of this study was to compare the 1-year outcomes of AGV implantation with and without Ologen adjuvant for the treatment of refractory glaucoma. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 20 eyes of 20 glaucoma patients, who were followed for at least 1-year after undergoing AGV implantation. In 12 eyes of 12 patients, conventional AGV (CAGV) surgery was performed, while in 8 eyes of 8 patients, Ologen-augmented AGV (OAGV) implantation was performed. The outcomes were evaluated according to intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of IOP-lowering medications. Complete success was defined as IOP ≤ 21 mmHg without medications throughout the 1-year follow-up period, and qualified success was defined as IOP ≤ 21 mmHg with or without medications throughout the 1-year follow-up period. RESULTS: The rate of complete success was significantly higher in the OAGV group (50.0%) than in the CAGV group (8.3%) (p = 0.035). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of qualified success or incidence of the early hypertensive phase. The IOP changes were similar between the groups within 1-year postoperatively, though the number of IOP-lowering medications was significantly lower in the OAGV group during the early hypertensive phase (p = 0.031, 0.031, and 0.025 at postoperative months 1, 2, and 3, respectively). When subjects were divided into groups according to the occurrence of the early hypertensive phase, the group with early hypertensive phase was more likely to use IOP-lowering medications at postoperative 6 months and 1 year (p = 0.002 and 0.005, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: OAGV surgery shows encouraging results for patients with refractory glaucoma, specifically with respect to the achievement of complete success and the reduction of the number of IOP-lowering medications during the early hypertensive phase. Furthermore, our results suggest that occurrence of the early hypertensive phase is predictive of which patients will require IOP-lowering medications at postoperative 6 months and 1 year.
